The things nobody tells you beforehand

What actually happens at the door
ID out before you reach the desk — twenty and over, physical document only. Bags may be checked. Phones are fine in public areas but not at the tables, and photography is not allowed on the floor. If you are attending a ticketed evening, the ticket is scanned separately from the ID check.
Dress code, in plain terms
Smart casual is the floor standard: closed shoes, no beachwear, no work boots, no visible team colours. Gala evenings ask for formal and mean it. Queenstown is the most relaxed of the four venues, Christchurch the most traditional. When in doubt, a collar solves it.
How tournament seating works
You register, pay the buy-in and are given a table and seat number drawn at random. Late registration is often open for the first hour or two but you start with fewer chips. Breaks are scheduled and announced; leaving mid-round costs you blinds, not your seat.
Setting limits before you go
Decide the number before you leave the house, take it in cash, and leave the cards at home. Every New Zealand venue can set you a self-exclusion or a pre-commitment on request, and the host desk arranges it without fuss. Tipping and etiquette
Tipping dealers is normal but never expected in New Zealand. Do not touch your bet once the dealer calls no more bets, do not hand cash directly to a dealer, and do not coach another player unless asked. Nobody minds a beginner; everybody minds a slow beginner who will not ask.
